When you do your grocery shopping for the next week, we encourage you to pick up a few extra items, food stuffs that would help feed some of our community's children on weekends.
Since it's inception at the start of this school year, Nourishing Greatness, an arm of the Vandalia ONE initiatve, has quickly grown to the level that it's providing weekend meals for children who might otherwise not get good meals.
Donations have been coming in from businesses, churches, organizations and individuals, and not it's a good time for residents to be a part of the effort.
At the final home game of the regular season for the Vandalia Vandals varsity football team next Friday night, Peoples State Bank is sponsoring a backpack food drive for Nourishing Greatness.
Admission to the game that night will be nonperishable backpack food items that will stock the Nourishing Greatness pantry.
The list of suggested food items includes:
• 4 pack fruit cups
• 6 pack Ramen noodles
• 4 pack Mac'n cheese cups
• 6 pack of raisins
• 6 pack of applesauce cups
• Box of instant hot cocoa packets
• 1 box individual instant oatmeal
• 4 pack vanilla pudding
• 4 pack chocolate pudding
• 3 Chef Boyardee tubs
• 1 variety pack of cereal
• 4 pack Jello cups
• 4 pack cheese 'n crackers
• Beef jerky sticks
• 1 box granola bars
• 1 box fruit chews
• Dairy Pure non-refrigerated milk boxes
• Bag of apples
Even if you don't plan to watch the football game, you can drop off donations at the gate at Mark Greer Field.
It takes a lot of teamwork to make this program successful, and your chance to join the team is next Friday night. We encourage you to do so.
