Many activities for Labor Day
As we prepare to celebrate the Labor Day weekend as the unofficial "end of summer" holiday and as a celebration of our nation's workers, there are many activities in the area that are worth noting.
This Friday, Saturday and Sunday is the Patoka Fall Festival. It kicks off Friday evening with karate and zumba demonstrations and a free movie. It continues on Saturday with a parade at 11 a.m. and a variety of events throughout the afternoon – including a demolition derby at 6 p.m. And then on Sunday, it concludes with an interdenominational church service in the park and a brunch at the Patoka American Legion Home at 10:30 a.m.
Not to be outdone, St. Elmo will hold a community auction in Avena Park at 10 a.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, a gospel band performance will be held at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth and Main streets. Then on Monday, a full day of activities will kick off with a pancake breakfast, will include a parade at 10:30 a.m. and will wrap up with an evening program that includes the naming of the "Citizen of the Year" at 6:15 p.m. and the "St. Elmo's Got Talent" show at 6:30 p.m.
The details of these events are spelled out on our Calendar of Events on page 2 of today's paper.
Certainly, there are other events are going on in the area, and we encourage residents to participate. It's a busy time, but we can enjoy the Labor Day holiday by supporting these local activities.
Whatever you decide to do, celebrate safely.
