South Central graduate Patton earns spot at Class AAA for playoff run

South Central High School graduate Spencer Patton has earned another promotion in the Kansas City Royals minor league system.

Patton, who began the season in Class A, has joined the Class AAA Omaha Storm Chasers of the Pacific Coast League for their playoff run.

Omaha finished the season at 70-74, but earned the American Conference North Division championships to earn its third straight division title.

Cougars beat BSE in Fayette County matchup

BROWNSTOWN – South Central got off to a quick start and never slowed down on Tuesday, defeating in-county rival Brownstown/St. Elmo, 11-3.

The Cougars posted five runs over the first two innings of the National Trail Conference game and posted four more over the fourth and fifth innings to take command of the contest.

Dylan Smith paced the offense – which had 15 hits – with two triples and a double, while Tyus Holmes added a triple and three RBI, Dre Hill doubled and Kyle Bray had two RBI.

Bushue retires from pro baseball

According to a report from The Times-Union, South Central High School graduate Tanner Bushue has retired from professional baseball.

Bushue, a 2009 graduate and second-round pick of the Houston Astros in that year's Major League Baseball draft, was 3-4 on the season, with a 5.14 earned-run average. He walked 13 and struck out 40 in 49 innings pitched for the Class A Short-Season Tri-City ValleyCats.

His final professional appearance came on Aug. 30, when he started against Vermont in his return from the seven-day disabled list.

BSE Sports Boosters to hold cookout

The Brownstown/St. Elmo High School Sports Boosters will hold the fourth annual cookout at Brownstown on Friday afternoon.

Food will be available in the elementary school cafeteria from 4-7 p.m..

The all-you-can-eat menu includes walleye, popcorn shrimp, chicken strips, potato salad, cole slaw, applesauce, baked beans, steak fries, hush puppies and drinks.

Cost is $9 for adults, and $6 for kids younger than 12. Carry out meals are available for $9.

Also at the event will be desserts, 50/50 and raffle baskets.

Second Metzger-Thiele Classic to be played here on Saturday

The second annual Metzger-Thiele Fall Baseball Classic will be held this Saturday at Vandalia Mutual Field.

College club baseball teams from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and Washington (Mo.) University will join the Field of Dreams All-Stars for the one-day round-robin event, which will begin at 9 a.m. with SIUE against the All-Stars.

At 11 a.m., SIUE will face Washington, and at 1 p.m., the All-Stars will take on Washington.

VANDALIA
It was expected to be a tough challenge at Carlinville for the Lady Vandals on Tuesday, and it was.
But Vandalia made the most of that challenge, going three sets in a 22-25, 25-22, 14-25 loss.
Senior Megan Godoyo had seven kills for the Lady Vandals (5-3, 1-2 South Central Conference), and is now one short of reaching 60 on the season.
Junior Kadi Metzger had four aces, and she leads the team with 17 on the season.

Payne was a loyal supporter of the Warriors baseball team, and was heavily involved in many other school activities.

The Warriors would beat Noble/West Richland, 10-0, on the day of the dedication.
