VANDALIA
It was expected to be a tough challenge at Carlinville for the Lady Vandals on Tuesday, and it was.
But Vandalia made the most of that challenge, going three sets in a 22-25, 25-22, 14-25 loss.
Senior Megan Godoyo had seven kills for the Lady Vandals (5-3, 1-2 South Central Conference), and is now one short of reaching 60 on the season.
Junior Kadi Metzger had four aces, and she leads the team with 17 on the season.
It marked the first time that Vandalia has lost in three sets this season, after winning the first two games that went the full length.
The Lady Vandals will continue conference play on Thursday, hosting Southwestern.
There will not be a freshman game that evening, but several younger Vandalia players will play a red/white scrimmage to open the night at 5 p.m.

BROWNSTOWN/ST. ELMO
Brownstown/St. Elmo and Mulberry Grove played a wild one in baseball last Wednesday, with the Bombers prevailing with a 16-12 victory in Egyptian-Illini Conference action.
The Aces scored eight times in the first two innings, but the Bombers (3-2, 2-0 EIC) tied the game with an eight-run fourth, and then added eight more runs in the next two innings.
Mulberry Grove added three runs in the sixth, but could only get one in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Dalton Parks had three hits, including a double, and four RBI, and senior Levi Maxey had a double and a triple, with two RBI.
Sophomore Malachi Maxey added a triple and three RBI, and junior Drake Hall, who got the win from the mound, had a pair of singles.
For Mulberry Grove, senior Nate Ketchem had a pair of doubles, and juniors Matt Korte and Derek Childress also doubled.
Childress took the loss, allowing 11 runs over the first 4 1/3 innings, while striking out five.
Hall pitched the last five innings of the game, allowing four runs and striking out three.

The Bombers picked up a nonconference win against Odin last Friday, coming from behind to take a 9-7 victory.
Odin scored four times in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, and then scored two in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead, 6-5.
Brownstown/St. Elmo (4-2) scored twice in each the sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.
Senior Levi Maxey had a double and a triple for the second straight game, and he drove in two runs.

In volleyball action, the Lady Warriors picked up a pair of wins in the past week.
Last Friday, Patoka beat Odin, 25-14, 25-21, in nonconference action.
The JV team lost, 13-25, 21-25.
In an Egyptian-Illini Conference matchup on Tuesday, the Lady Warriors were 25-16, 25-15 winners at Mulberry Grove.

RAMSEY
Ramsey took the first set but wasn’t able to get a win in its Egyptian-Illini Conference opener against Cowden-Herrick.
The Lady Rams (0-2, 0-1 EIC) lost, 25-18, 13-25, 25-10.
Senior Rhonda McDonald had five kills to pace the Lady Rams offense.

The Lady Rams opened their season last Tuesday with a close loss at Morrisonville.
With just two returning varsity starters, Ramsey took a 22-25, 20-25 loss.
Senior Rhonda McDonald led the attack game with four kills, and senior Sydney Lay, junior Abbi Cunningham and sophomore Skye Kimberlin each served an ace for the Lady Rams (0-1).

Sophomore Gabi Moore was selected to the all-tournament team at last Saturday’s Mattoon Invite.
Moore had 14 kills, committed just one serving error in 31 tries, made one reception error in 72 tries and dug up 34 attacks during the event, which saw St. Elmo/Brownstown finish at 1-4.
The Lady Eagles (3-5) beat Sullivan, 25-22, 15-25, 15-12, in the final game of the event. Losses came to Neoga (18-25, 23-25), Pana (15-25, 16-25), Taylorville (24-25, 22-25) and Warrensburg-Latham (11-25, 18-25).
Jenna Miller paced St. Elmo/Brownstown with 17 kills in the event, while Bethany Oberlink also had 14.
Sarah Maxey was the leading server, with 10 aces, and Michaela Walk led with 18 serves.

St. Elmo/Brownstown remained undefeated in the Egyptian-Illini and National Trail conferences on Tuesday, with a two-set win at Cowden-Herrick.
The Lady Eagles (4-5, 2-0 EIC, 2-0 NTC) won the match, 25-17, 25-22, racking up 13 aces and 20 kills during the victory.
Senior Bethany Oberlink was the team leader with four aces, and Sarah Maxey added three, while Kristen Barnick, Gabi Moore and Michaela Walk posted two.
Erica Behl led with six kills, and Katie Kroll and Moore each had four.

The Lady Eagles (2-1, 1-0 NTC) beat their Fayette County rival, 25-18, 25-19, on the strength of 22 kills.
Jenna Miller paced the attack with a career-high seven kills on 11 attacks, and five other players contributed three.

The big hits continued for South Central last Thursday.
Kyle Bray had a home run and two doubles, and Tyler Ross and Dylan Smith each doubled for the Cougars during an 11-1 win against Beecher City in National Trail Conference action.
The five extra-base hits give South Central (3-1, 3-1 NTC) 13 through the first four games, as the offense has pounded out 31 runs.
Ross earned his first win for the Cougars, striking out six over six innings of work, surrendering just one run on three hits and three walks.
