Vandals drop game to Staunton

The Vandals looked better than the first two games at times, but mistakes caught up with them in the end, as Staunton rolled to a 40-12 victory at Mark Greer Field on Friday night.

Junior Collin Nestleroad was effective in his return from a concussion, throwing a pair of touchdowns, and running the ball without hesitation on option plays. Sophomore Bobby Bradley had his first career 100-yard rushing performance, which included a 51-yard dash.

In Vandalia on Thursday, the volleyball team took a 17-25, 25-15, 18-25 loss to Southwestern in South Central Conference action.

The Vandalia golf team went 1-1 at a tri-match in Greenville, shooting a 190. Greenville won, with 165, and Pana was third, with 203.

In Brownstown, the Bombers and Patoka battled in Egyptian-Illini Conference baseball action, with Patoka beating Brownstown/St. Elmo, 1-0.

The St. Elmo/Brownstown volleyball squad picked up a big win against Teutopolis, 25-23, 14-25, 25-20.

The Vandalia golf team finished second to Christ Our Rock Lutheran on Wednesday at Vandalia Country Club. The Vandals shot a 177, but CORL posted a 159. Junior Zach Schaal finished second among individuals.

South Central's baseball team extended its five-game winning streak with a 11-1 win against Webber Township. Four Cougars had two hits in the game.

St. Elmo/Brownstown's junior high softball season ended on Wednesday, with a 16-4 loss to Okaw Valley in the regional quarterfinals. The Jr. Lady Eagles were 6-11 on the fall.

Several players to return for first home game

After two long road trips, the Vandals will be at home for the next two games.

“It was two long bus rides against two good ball clubs, so we kind of got a baptism by fire the first two weeks,” said coach John Stout after his team surrendered 46 points in both of those games. “It’ll be nice to get around some familiar surroundings.”

Staunton (2-0) will come to town for a 7 p.m. game this Friday in what is expected to be another tough matchup for the Vandals (0-2).

Sophomore Bradley carries workload at Carlinville

CARLINVILLE – After opening the season with no carries, Vandalia sophomore Bobby Bradley found himself with a big workload last Friday in the second game of the season.

When senior running back Dalton Smith suffered a concussion on the first play of the second offensive series, Bradley became the primary ball carrier for the Vandals and made the most of his opportunity during a 46-0 loss at Carlinville.

Another prominent Vandals player injured in loss

CARLINVILLE – The injuries continued to pile up for the Vandals football team last Friday night.

Already short several players, another Vandalia starter was lost to a concussion early in a 46-0 loss at Carlinville.

“We threw a lot of young guys in there tonight,” said coach John Stout, who had to replace two juniors and a senior. “Hopefully, we get some of the hurt guys back next week.”

Late timeout motivates Vandalia to take 3rd

ALTAMONT – Apparently, benching threats from Vandalia volleyball coach Allison Hall are to be taken seriously.

After a lackluster performance to start the second set in a battle of Fayette County teams for third place at Saturday’s Altamont Tournament, Hall called a timeout and gave her players a simple message.

“Basically, I said that if any balls touch the floor, that person is coming out,” Hall said. “We get into this funk where they are playing for themselves.

Lady Vandals knocked off by pesky Roxana squad

VANDALIA – It didn’t seem that anything the Lady Vandals did in the attack game last Thursday would work.

Vandalia’s players hit with authority at times and then tried off-speed tips, but a pesky Roxana squad dug up almost all of those attacks on the way to handing the Lady Vandals their first loss with a 25-18, 25-9 victory in South Central Conference action.

Vandalia gets a tie vs. CORL for 3rd year

For the third straight season, Vandalia and Christ Our Rock Lutheran have played to a 2-2 draw.

Senior Colin Ledbtter and junior Dalton Waschle each scored goals for Vandalia, which has put in 15 so far this season.

Ledbetter had an assist.

Junior Blake Torbeck had 10 saves for the Vandals (1-3-1).

Vandalia travels to Litchfield on Monday.
