The Next Level: Graduate athlete roundup (April 17)

Many athletes who spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who recently made headlines.

Spencer Patton • Pitcher • Omaha Storm Chasers

•April 11 – Patton, a South Central graduate, picked up his second save of the season after pitching the final three innings of a 5-4 win at Nashville. The Kansas City Royals AAA prospect allowed one earned run on two hits and three walks, but struck out four.

Jennifer Potts • Sophomore • Central Missouri • Bowling

•April 10-12 – Potts, a Mulberry Grove graduate, bowled three games individually at the NCAA Tournament. She rolled a 205, 206 and 148 (186.3 average) for the Jennies, who were 2-5 in qualifying and 0-2 in the championship bracket. Potts had a 193.94 average in 115 games this season.

Quenten Austin • Soph. • Carthage • Track

•April 12 – Austin, a Vandalia graduate, participated in three events for the No. 18 Carthage College men's track team at the Benedictine Eagle Invitational. He was ninth in the long jump (20 feet, 1 3/4 inches), 13th in the shot put (41 feet, 1 inch) and 15th in the discus (118 feet, 9 inches). Carthage placed third.

Abby Hill • Junior • Greenville • Track

•April 11-12 – Hill, a St. Elmo graduate, placed fifth in the hammer throw (141 feet, 8 inches) at the St. Louis University Invitational.

Trevor Montgomery • Soph. • Greenville • Baseball

•April 11 – Montgomery, a Vandalia graduate, went 1-for-4, with a double, to extend his seven-game hitting streak in a 3-1 loss at Webster.
•April 9 – Montgomery went 2-for-4, with a double, RBI and run, in a 6-3 win at MacMurray, and in game two, went 1-for-5, with an RBI and a run, in a 14-13 win.
•April 5 – Montgomery went 2-for-5, with a home run, three RBI and a run, in a 6-5 win at Fontbonne, and in game two, went 3-for-5 in a 4-3 loss.

Dathan Berning • Soph. • Greenville • Baseball

•April 9 – Berning, a Vandalia graduate, went 1-for-3, with a run in a 6-3 win at MacMurray, and in game two, he went 0-for-4, with two walks and a run in a 14-13 win.
•April 5 – Berning went 1-for-4, with a run, in a 4-3 loss at Fontbonne.

Morgan Whightsil • Frosh. • Illinois College • Softball

•April 5 – Whightsil, a Vandalia graduate, went 0-for-2, but scored two runs in a 13-1 win against Grinnell College.

Becca Oldham • Freshman • Greenville • Softball

•April 9 – Oldham, a Mulberry Grove graduate, went 2-for-4, with a double, home run, RBI and two runs, in a 10-0 win at MacMurray, and in game two, she went 2-for-4, with a double, home run, three RBI and a run, in a 10-3 win.

Harley Tompkins • Soph. • Parkland • Softball

•April 12 – Tompkins, a Mulberry Grove graduate, went 1-for-2, with three RBI and two runs in a 14-1 win at Spoon River College, and in game two, she went 0-for-1, with two walks and three runs in a 15-2 win.
•April 10 – Tompkins 1-for-3, with an RBI, in a 6-0 win at Lincoln College, and in game two, she went 2-for-3, with two runs and an RBI, in a 13-1 win.

Cheyenne Rogier • Soph. • Lewis and Clark • Softball

•April 12 – Rogier, a Mulberry Grove graduate, went 2-for-3, with two doubles and an RBI, in a 6-5 win against Heartland Community College.
•April 9 – Rogier went 1-for-3, with a double and a run, in a 17-6 loss at Mineral Area College, and in game two, she went 2-for-4, with a solo home run.

Macie Cain • Freshman • Danville Area CC • Softball

•April 12 – Cain, a South Central graduate, went 2-for-4, with a double, home run, RBI and run, in a 6-5 win against Kaskaskia College.
•April 11 – Cain went 1-for-3, in a 6-0 loss to Wabash College.
•April 8 – Cain went 1-for-3 in a 7-1 loss to Lake Land Community College.
