Several win at home track meet

VANDALIA – The Vandals set a new school record in the 4X100-meter relay at last Thursday’s home meet.

Sophomores Ethan Meyer and Bobby Bradley, and seniors Colton Woolsey and Dalton Smith teamed up to the run the race in 46.99 seconds, setting the school record by about half a second.

The previous record of 47.54 seconds was set in 2010 by Tim Ritchey, Blake Swofford, Quenten Austin and Ryan Ambuehl.

This year’s relay team missed the record by just .04 seconds at Hillsboro on April 1.

Vandalia (31 points) finished third in the meet against Pana (95) and Greenville (57).

Woolsey picked up his second straight first-place finish in the shot put, throwing 43 feet, 5 inches. He has improved his distance in all three meets this season, increasing his best throw by 3 feet, 9 inches since the start of the season.

Junior Ben Strobel ran the 3,200-meter run for the first time this season, winning the race in 10:43.28, and he also finished third in the mile (5:05.51).

Freshman Curtis Gordon cleared 14 feet to win the pole vault.

The girls placed second as a team, and had four first-place finishers.

Freshman Emma Meyer won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, sophomore Jalea Paslay won the 400-meter dash and sophomore Jensen Hollinshead won the shot put.

Vandalia (46 points) was second to Greenville (87) but beat Pana (40).

Vandalia will be at home again on Thursday at 4:15 p.m., and travels to the Cumberland Invitational next Tuesday.

Both the boys and girls were in Roxana on Tuesday, but full results were not available by press time.

The only reported result was Woolsey's first-place finish in the shot put. His throw went 43 feet, 7 1/2 inches.

It was Woolsey's third straight win in the shot put, and he improved his distance for the fourth time.

Full results will be available in the April 24 edition of The Leader-Union.
