Carlinville wins to spoil senior night

VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals struggled offensively last Friday night, allowing Carlinville to steal a win and spoil Vandalia’s senior night.

The Lady Cavaliers were stifled by Vandalia’s defense for most of the night, but the lack of offense allowed Carlinville to take the 39-26 victory in the South Central Conference finale.

Seniors Morgan Cripe, Randi Evans, Megan Godoyo, Kaitlyn Kershaw, Brandy Protz and Kylie Sellers were recognized prior to the game, and all grabbed at least one rebound and four of them scored.

Evans and Godoyo led the team with six points each, while sophomores Madelyn Hosick and Makayla Tinker both had four points.

The defense forced Carlinville into 23 turnovers, but the Lady Vandals (6-20, 1-7 SCC) scored just five points off of the miscues – all in the fourth quarter.

Carlinville led by as many as eight in the first quarter, but a 9-4 run for Vandalia made it a three-point game with 6:47 left in the first half.

Over the next 13:22, the only points for the Lady Vandals were Godoyo’s six, and that gave Carlinville a 35-19 advantage.

Vandalia finishes the regular season short one game in the conference standings, because last Wednesday’s game against Staunton was postponed due to snow.

With the Carlinville game moving from last Thursday to last Friday and the regional tournament beginning on Monday, there wasn’t an opportunity to reschedule the Staunton game.
