Vandalia to finish season at Greenville

VANDALIA – The football season comes to a close this Friday with a road game against undefeated Greenville, which hasn’t lost to Vandalia since 1998.

It will mark the final football game in the seniors’ careers, and Stout said that despite a rough season, they are still leaving behind a legacy.

“They aren’t going to the playoffs, but they have been a part of two playoff teams,” he said. “The thing they are going to leave is that they are going to show the younger kids that no matter the situation, you have to come back ready to go.”

The game has again been dubbed the Pink Bowl by Greenville Regional Hospital in support of cancer awareness.

And though the Vandals (1-7) are likely to lose, there are several individual milestones that could be met during the game.

•Sophomore Bobby Bradley needs 4 rushing yards for 700 on the season.
•Senior Dalton Smith needs 28 rushing yards for 600 on the season.
•Junior Collin Nestleroad needs 49 rushing yards for 400 on the season.
•Senior C.J. Runkel needs 7 rushing yards for 300 on the season.
•Nestleroad needs 9 passing yards for 400 on the season.
•Nestleroad needs 58 total offensive yards for 800 on the season.
•Smith needs 9 receiving yards for 100 on the season.
•The Vandals need 60 rushing yards for 2,000 on the season.
•The Vandals need 88 total offensive yards for 2,500 on the season.

Those goals are all attainable, but Greenville will still be a stiff challenge.

The Comets (8-0) do have some injuries to key defensive players – a big reason why Greenville allowed 50 points to Gillespie last week – but still have the second-best scoring defense for the season at 22.125 points allowed per game.

And their offense is even better.

Greenville has averaged 48.125 points per game on offense, scoring 77 more points than any other team in the South Central Conference this season. In the past three games, the Comets are averaging 59.3 points per game.

Senior Eric Turok is Greenville’s leading rusher, with 1,215 yards and 21 touchdowns on 132 carries.

Tyler Hutchinson has passed for 2,276 yards and 21 touchdowns on the season. Four receivers are averaging at least 15 yards per catch for the Comets.

That balance has proven difficult to contain by even the best team’s in the conference, as Greenville has scored 164 points against the next three best SCC teams.

The game will kick off at 7 p.m. from Greenville High School.

Vandalia senior center Tristin Long gets ready to block a Pana defensive lineman during last Friday’s game. He is one of several seniors who will play their final game this Friday at Greenville.
