Lady Vandals beat Shelbyville for first win of ’13
VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals picked up their first win of the fall in dominating fashion on Tuesday, taking eight of nine matches against Shelbyville.
Vandalia (1-1) outscored the Lady Rams, 99-34, over the nine matches, with Shelbyville’s lone win coming in No. 3 singles, with Kayla Lee outlasting junior Courtney Ulmer, 11-9, in a match that lasted nearly two hours.
Sophomore Hannah Blythe remains undefeated in singles after picking up a 10-0 win against Mykenna Allen, and senior Kristyn Nichols and junior Nicole Wells each earned their first career varsity singles wins.
Nichols defeated Rachel West, 10-5, in No. 5 singles, and No. 6 Wells battled Julia Bolinger to a 12-10 win in her first-ever varsity singles match.
Senior Karlee Brimberry added her first win of the season, with a 10-2 victory against Alexis Halbrook.
She then teamed with Blythe in No. 1 doubles to win 10-2, while Ulmer and Dothager were 10-0 winners at No. 2 and Wells and freshman Emma Meyer won 8-1 at No. 3, giving Meyer a win in her first-ever varsity match.
The win followed a 7-2 home loss to Roxana on Monday.
Blythe was a 10-4 winner against Sami Owsley in No. 1 singles, and Ulmer picked up a 10-7 win against Anna Ballard at No. 3, but those would be Vandalia’s only wins.
Several other matches were close, however, with Brimberry, Dothager and senior Kendall Leander each losing 10-7 in singles, and Nichols and Leander losing 10-7 in doubles, so it could be a different result on Sept. 24 when the Lady Vandals travel to Roxana.
Vandalia stays at home on Thursday, with a 4 p.m. match against Greenville, but that will be its final action until Sept. 12, when a seven-match road stretch begins at Hillsboro.
