Seven Jr. Vandals qualify for state meet

Seven Jr. Vandals qualified for the Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA state track meet, with six girls and one boy making the meet.

Eighth-grader Curtis Gordon qualified in two events, tying his school record of 12 feet in the pole vault to place first at the Pana Sectional, and finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles.

For the girls, three seventh-graders and three eighth-graders will make the trip to the Eastside Centre in East Peoria on Friday and Saturday.

Seventh-graders Katie Tarkington (100), Olivia Marquardt (discus) and Karsyn Garrison (high jump) each qualified at Saturday's sectional, and eighth-graders Emma Meyer (pole vault, 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash), Anna Miller (100-meter hurdles) and Jensen Hollinshead (shot put) qualified.

Marquardt additionally set a school record in the 1,600-meter run, with a time 5:46.04, which was 16 seconds faster than her personal record.

As a team, the eighth-grader girls placed third at the sectional.
