KINMUNDY – South Central used a consistent offensive effort to back a complete game for Shawn Meyer to defeat Casey-Westfield in the opening game of the South Central Wooden Bat Invitational.

Those wood bats didn’t slow down the Cougars, who pounded out 11 hits in the 8-2 victory.

The damage started right away, with senior Fischer Tharp opening the bottom of the first with a double, and senior Dan Diss following with a single. Sophomore Noah Powless walked to load the bases.

Each scored, first on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Smith, then on one-run singles from seniors Austin Schwarm and Shawn Meyer.

Meyer, meanwhile, was tossing a shutout, striking out four batters through three innings.

In the bottom of the third, South Central (4-5) extended its lead, getting three more runs, with seniors Drake Ritter, Schwarm and Tharp each earning an RBI.

Casey-Westfield finally got to Meyer in the fourth, scoring a run on a pair of singles.

But the Cougars continued pouring on the offense in the fifth, getting two more runs with five base runners.

Meyer and senior Rudy Hablewitz singled to open the inning and were moved ahead a base on a sacrifice bunt from Ritter.

Tharp walked to load the bases, and Diss drove in a run on an infield single, and Smith would bring home another run when he was hit by a pitch.

Casey-Westfield added a home run in the sixth.
