Aces Insider: Sophomore Goodin to miss season with torn ACL

MULBERRY GROVE – One of the best pitchers, hitters and infielders for the Aces will miss the spring season due to injury.

Alex Goodin, a sophomore who is a vital member of the team, recently suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will not be available to play this spring.

“He’s still around and in and out of rehab,” said coach Chad Nelson. “We are keeping our fingers crossed that his surgery and rehab will go well.”

It's estimated that Goodin still has at least six months of recovery time, unless the severity of the tear is worse than anticipated.

That could put him on track to return for at least part of the fall season.

And though the injury is a significant blow in terms of on-field play, it will give Nelson an opportunity to teach all the players about fighting through adversity, which is one of the core values he is hoping to instill in his team.

“It’s frustrating,” Nelson said. “But we have talked about adversity, and things are going to happen, so we still have to find a way to get the job done.”

All the small things

Matt Korte doesn't have the look of a prototypical athlete.

He's short and stocky as a second baseman for the Aces and doesn't post big offensive numbers, but it's what he does away from the field that make him a very valuable member of the team.

“He will outwork anybody,” Nelson said. “He won’t wow you with power, but he will work to find a way on base.”

Opening Day

The Aces were scheduled to open the season on Tuesday against Sandoval, but because of poor field conditions, the game had to be postponed.

The teams will meet on Thursday at 4:15 p.m., and Mulberry Grove will also play at South Central on Monday.
