BLOOMINGTON – The Vandals battled hard in an emotional 31-29 loss to Litchfield in the first round of the dual team state tournament.
Taking on the Purple Panthers at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, the Vandals were able to significantly cut the margin of victory for Litchfield, which beat the Vandals, 39-21, on Jan. 10.
In the final two bouts, Vandalia needed pins to get the team win after freshmen Kolten Etcheson and Kendrick Woolsey each refused to get pinned at 220 and 285 pounds, but it was not to be.
The Vandals did reverse some decisions from the first time against Litchfield, but also had worse results at several weights.
Coach Jason Clay said he was proud of the way his team battled on Saturday, and by how much the team improved since the beginning of the season.
Vandalia finishes the season with a 20-12 record, and as the 15th team from the school to make the state tournament.
Litchfield went to 28-3 with the win, and lost to Mercer County, 57-14, in the semifinals, and will battle PORTA for third-place.

At 106 pounds, Chaston Womack won, 4-2, but Litchfield has clinched the dual. Ryne Lipsey will have a forfeit at 113, and the Vandals will end the season at 20-12.

At 152, Jake Stewart won, 11-2; and at 160, Todd Ashdown lost by fall at 2:43. Litchfield leads, 19-11.
9:42 a.m. – Tyler Dagen loses by minor decision, 6-5. Litchfield leads, 13-7.
9:32 a.m. – Dalton Blankenship (138) won by minor decision, 5-0. Litchfield leads, 10-7.
9:24 a.m. – Rodney Tedrick (132) falls by major decision, 10-0. Litchfield leads, 10-4.
9:15 a.m. – Adam Palmer (126) loses by falll at 1:16.
9:12 a.m. – Luke Tessman (120) wins a major decision, 12-2.
