Mulberry Grove takes third at state

The Mulberry Grove seventh-grade boys basketball team placed third in the state last Thursday with a 41-38 win against Chrisman Scottland.

Four Jr. Eagles scored in double-figures, with Presley Gauch's 11 points leading the team. Cortland Latham, Joey Linnaberry and Javion Wright each scored 10 in the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 7-1A state tournament at St. Joseph Middle School.

Mulberry Grove led by eight at halftime, but that lead was trimmed to just a point with about 30 seconds remaining. Latham made a pair of free throws to put Mulberry Grove ahead by three and seal the victory.

The game was tied at 13 after the first period, but the Jr. Eagles outscored Chrisman Scottland, 13-5, in the second period. Chrisman Scottland won the second-half scoring battle, 20-15.

Mulberry Grove finished the season at 12-5.

Annawan, which defeated the Jr. Eagles in the semifinals, was the state champion, beating Dieterich, 45-40.
