Two local junior high teams advance at state

A pair of local junior high boys basketball teams advanced in their respective state tournament over the weekend.

Mulberry Grove's seventh-graders advanced to the third-place game of the IESA Class 1A state tournament on Saturday by splitting its first two games at state at St. Joseph's Junior High.

The Jr. Eagles beat Bradley St. Joseph, 31-24, in the first round, getting eight points from Cortland Latham and seven from Javion Wright.

That advanced the team to the semifinals, where it lost to Annawan, 42-12. Mulberry Grove (11-5) will play for third place on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Patoka's team won its first round game of the SIJHSAA Class S state tournament at Rend Lake College on Saturday, beating Breese All Saints Academy, 54-41.

Patoka got a triple-double from Jered Cain, who had 21 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists, and the Jr. Mohawks play on Monday in the quarterfinals against Pinckneyville at 7:15 p.m.
