For now, Vandalia wrestling’s regional championship streak at 19
MOUNT CARMEL – As it stands, Vandalia's wrestlers won their 19th straight regional championship on Saturday.
Coach Jason Clay and Robinson's coach had different results than the scorer's table, which gave the Vandals a 179-175.5 victory. Initially, Vandalia's wrestlers believed they had lost by just half a point, and Robinson now has 48 hours to appeal the result.
If Robinson's coaches do a double-check of the scoring and find a different result, the meet result would be overturned with a successful appeal.
Four individuals picked up titles for the Vandals, and eight wrestlers will battle at next weekend's Vandalia Sectional.
Chaston Womack (106), Dalton Blankenship (138), Tyler Dagen (145) and Zach Jackson (160) each placed first, while Ryne Lipsey (113), Rodney Tedrick (132) and Sean Newcomb (195) placed second.
Jake Stewart (152) won a third-place battle to advance.
This is a breaking news update. More information will be available in the Feb. 7 edition of The Leader-Union.
