Vandals finish 6-3 in busy week of quadrangulars

The Vandalia wrestling team had a busy seven days dating back to last Thursday, wrestling nine teams and going 6-3.

Dalton Blankenship, a sophomore, and senior Zach Jackson each went 9-0. They lead the team in wins, with 28 and 27, respectively.

On Saturday, the Vandals host their third quadrangular of the season with PORTA, Beardston and Clinton coming to town, and they travel to O’Fallon next Thursday.

But on a downside, Vandalia will be without Blake Cripe for the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury.

This is the second season in a row his year has been cut short. He broke a finger as a freshman.

On Monday, the Vandals traveled to Roxana for a quad meet, and emerged with a 2-1 record.
Vandalia defeated Belleville East, 37-32, and Mascoutah, 45-30, but lost a narrow match with Roxana, 37-36.

Junior Tyler Dagen and senior Sean Newcomb each recorded three pins on the night, which saw the Vandals improve their season record to 17-9.

VANDALIA – A comeback win against Robinson highlighted an otherwise dull Saturday for the Vandals at a home quad.

Vandalia pinned the last three wrestlers in that match to win 42-38, while also beating Murphysboro, 44-28, and losing to Monticello, 42-33.

The Vandals trailed Robinson, 39-24, going into the 138-pound bout, which saw sophomore Dalton Blankenship pin his opponent in 16 seconds.

He was followed by junior Tyler Dagen’s pin in 1:00, and sophomore Jake Stewart’s pin in 3:00. Robinson was assessed a technical violation and lost a team point in that bout.

The Vandals had previously beaten Robinson, 52-21, during the St. Thomas More New Year Challenge, so coach Jason Clay had confidence his wrestlers would make up the deficit.

“All of those kids won the last time, so we were expecting them to win today,” Clay said. “It was exciting to watch them come through for us.”

Otherwise, the team showed its youth, getting pinned 14 times on the afternoon.

After the upper weights against Murphysboro, the Vandals trailed 21-18, but at 106 pounds, freshman Chaston Womack engaged his opponent in a near-fall with 14 seconds left in his bout and pinned him with just six seconds left on the clock.

That started a streak of wins for the Vandals, who would lose just one of the remaining six bouts.

Senior Zach Jackson opened the Monticello match with a pin, but it was one of just six wins for Vandalia, two of which were forfeits.

He and sophomore Dalton Blankenship were the only two wrestlers to get three wins in the quad.

“We’re still a young team,” Clay said. “We’ll move forward, learn from this and stay positive.”

The Vandals went 2-1 at a quad meet in Highland, beating the hosts and Marquette Catholic, but falling to Litchfield.

Against Marquette, Vandalia had only five non-forfeit decisions in a 78-0 rout.

Six Vandals had a pin against Highland in a 49-24 win, but Litchfield was able to take a 39-21 win that saw the Vandals win just four bouts.

Senior Zach Jackson, sophomores Dalton Blankenship and Ryne Lipsey, and freshman Luke Tessman were each 3-0 at the event.

Both Blankenship and Jackson picked up their 20th win of the season for the Vandals (13-7).
