Tennis team takes second at Highland

On Saturday, a freshmen doubles team placed first to lead the Lady Vandals to a second-place finish at the Highland Doubles Tournament.

Karlie Bright and Makayla Tinker won No. 5 doubles, and two other teams placed second to help Vandalia score 13 team points to fall into second place.

Centralia (19) was the winner, while Hillsboro (nine) took third. Bright and Tinker’s win against Centralia’s Molly Hutson and Sruti Swesh was the Orphan Annies' only loss in the tournament.

“This is just the beginning of things to come for them,” Schroeder said. “They are both very talented athletes who just need more experience and have a lot of room to improve.

“Their potential is unlimited.”

Seniors Paige Ehrat and Bailey Jones secured second place by going 3-1 on the day, at No. 2, and seniors Emilie Britt and Jordan Boren also went 3-1 to place second at No. 3.

The No. 1 team of Hannah Blythe and Karlee Brimberry placed third after going 2-2, and the No. 4 team of senior Morgan Whightsil and sophomore Courtney Ulmer placed fourth after going 1-3.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” Schroeder said. “What surprised me was that Hillsboro is better than I thought they were, and since Greenville is pretty good, that was a good finish for us.”

On Monday, Vandalia suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Hillsboro, 6-3.

Britt got the Lady Vandals’ only singles win during the match, and the teams of Blythe/Brimberry and Jones/Boren each won in doubles.

Vandalia (2-1) played well, but there were a lot of close matches that didn’t go to the Lady Vandals, so the rematch at Hillsboro on Sept. 24 should be an exciting one
