St. Elmo falls in sectional semifinals
BRIDGEPORT- The St. Elmo boys basketball team had trouble making shots from the field during a 58-39 loss to Woodlawn on Wednesday night in the sectional semifinals.
Senior Ben Sperry led the Eagles (22-8), with 14 points and eight rebounds, but that was not enough to overcome two first-half runs by Woodlawn that put St. Elmo behind 27-18 at halftime.
After Sperry hit a layup to open the scoring, Woodlawn used a layup of its own and back-to-back 3-pointers to start an 11-0 run that put St. Elmo behind, 11-2.
The Eagles would close the quarter on a 9-2 run and got within on point of the lead in the second quarter when junior Connor Beasely made a 3-pointer, but that shot was followed by an 8-0 by Woodlawn.
After that point, the Cardinals would not trail by more than seven, and they held at least a 10-point lead for most of the fourth period.

Senior Ben Sperry goes in for a layup.

Junior Connor Beasley shoots from the outside.
