South Central's strong second half ends with 12-point loss in regional semifinals

The South Central boys basketball team had a strong second half, but its season came to a close last Wednesday during the regional semifinals, where it was defeated by Altamont, 50-38.

The game was knotted at 12 after the first period, but the Indians used a 25-13 run over the middle two quarters to take a 37-25 lead into the final stretch.

The Cougars were led by junior Rudy Hablewitz, who had 11 points – including a pair of 3-pointers. He, along with junior Fischer Tharp, on Friday advanced to the sectional round of the 3-point shootout.

Also during the game, senior Colby Bushue added 10 points, which included his 300th of the season.

South Central closed the season with an 11-18 mark, but that included a 9-6 record after the new year began.

Bruno just misses cut at state shootout

Vandalia junior Amber Bruno last Thursday missed the state finals of the Country Financial 3-point Shootout by one shot.

She led her group of shooters in the preliminary round by making 10 shots, but she finished in a three-way tie for third.

In the tie-breaker round, Bruno made three shots, while two other participants made four.

Paige Rakers of Carlyle was the Class 2A champion, with 11 makes in the finals and seven makes in the finals tie-breaker.
