St. Elmo routs MGHS; inducts to Wall of Fame
The St. Elmo High School basketball team had little trouble handling Mulberry Grove on Saturday, the same night the school inducted new members to its Wall of Fame.
Prior to the Eagles' 94-28 thrashing of the Aces, four individuals and one team were honored.
Bob Olson, Bruce Williams, Dan Denton and Fred Moss were the individuals inducted, and the 1944-45 boys basketball team was also honored.
The game, meanwhile, saw the Eagles take control immediately.
Senior Blake Pruett scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter, powering St. Elmo to a 39-3 run over the first eight minutes.
In total, the Eagles made six 3-pointers in the first period and six players scored, with each of them netting at least three points.
Mulberry Grove posted double-digit scoring in the second quarter, getting baskets from four different players, but a 20-point effort from St. Elmo put the Eagles ahead, 59-14, at halftime.
The Aces had a difficult time in the third period, too, getting just one basket from their leading scorer, Devonta Williamson, a sophomore. St. Elmo added 15 more points to move ahead, 74-16.
St. Elmo reserves Reece Wells and Jacob Denton combined to score 12 of the team's 20 fourth-quarter points, while Mulberry Grove's Shawn Willis earned all eight of his points in the final period.
He led the Aces in scoring for the game.
St. Elmo's 94 points marked the second time this season that the team has scored 90 points. The first came on Jan. 14, during a 90-76 win against Dieterich.
St. Elmo was on a nine-game winning streak through Tuesday.
