Lady Cougars bow out in second round of regionals

The South Central High School girls basketball team was the only one in the area to advance to the second round of the regional tournament, but the Lady Cougars lost to North Clay in the second round last Wednesday, 54-35. Senior Ashley Pollard scored 14 points in her final game with South Central (4-15, 2-3 Midland Trail Conference). She led the team in scoring with 14.6 points per game, which was also good for second in the area. Fellow senior Haley Rambo scored five points in her South Central finale against the Lady Cardinals, who finished 5-0 in MTC play this season. The teams were tied at eight after the first quarter, despite South Central getting no points from Pollard. All of the Lady Cougars’ points in the first were converted by junior Alexis Phillips. The Lady Cougars, however, surrendered 18 points in the second period, while scoring just six themselves. Five Lady Cardinals scored in that stretch, which gave them a 26-14 halftime lead. South Central cut into that lead in the third period, outscoring North Clay, 13-9, but Megan Healy and Andrea Buhrmann would score 17 of North Clay’s 19 points in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory. Pollard made four 3-pointers in the game, including three in the second half. The Lady Cougars finished fifth in the MTC this season.
