The College Report: Recovered Doehring scores first TD of season for IC

Vandalia grad Brock Doehring has definitely had his ups and downs as a football player.
Saturday, Sept. 18, was definitely one of the good moments.

Illinois College defeated Lake Forest College 27-7, as Doehring scored a touchdown. The IC starting tight end caught one pass for 3 yards to score IC's first points of the contest. The 3-yard pass closed an 11-play, 52-yard drive in 4:20. He entered the end zone with the Mitch Niekamp pass with 10:40 to play in the first quarter. It was his only catch of the contest.

"We are hoping he will stick around for one more year," said Garrett Campbell, who noted Doehring has one more year of eligibility. "He has a great work ethic, unbelievable desire and a tremendous attitude.

"He is a big kid with soft hands. He is a solid football player for us. Brock returned from a serious injury, and we are not at all surprised. He is that kind of athlete."

Even though he did not have any stats, Mitch Whightsil, also a Vandalia grad, started at wide receiver for IC. Illinois College has since lost to Monmouth College (33-9). They are 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Midwest Conference.

The University of Illinois men's cross country team won the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships, which was hosted by Illinois State University. The Fighting Illini finished with 25 points to easily top North Central College, which finished with 51. Former Vandalia athlete Drew Bell, a Fighting Illini runner, finished 53rd in the 8,000-meter race. Bell, who ran unattached, toured the course in 26 minutes, 10 seconds.

Rockford College is 1-9 in its first 10 volleyball matches. Former St. Elmo player Maribel Guerrero posted more than 10 digs per game against both Illinois Wesleyan University and Buena Vista University, which both ended in 3-0 losses for Rockford. In the loss to Buena Vista, the 5-foot-4 senior defensive specialist had 18 digs. She finished with 11 digs in the loss to Central College, which served as the host of the Central College Classic.

Through the first 10 matches, Guerrero had 97 digs, seven service aces and five assists. Rockford is 0-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference.

The Illinois College women's golf team has golfed in three outings in the past two weeks. Former Vandalia golfer Meagan Wright, an IC golfer, had her best outing of the three on her home course, during the Illinois College Fall Tournament, which was held at The Links Golf Course in Jacksonville. Wright shot a 115 and finished ninth overall. Illinois College won the tournament with a stroke count of 386. Lincoln Community College finished second with a 450.

Names, names, names. We are looking for names of not only fall athletes, but winter as well. I will need the name of the athlete, the former high school, the college/university they are attending and, of course, the sport they are playing.

There are only two rules to be included in this column. The athlete must be a resident of a town or a graduate of a high school normally covered by The Leader-Union. In addition, they must be involved in intercollegiate athletics. If you have a name to add, e-mail me ([email protected]). Please put "Vandalia Leader-Union" in the subject line of every e-mail.
