Warren Bradley “Smitty” Smith, 52, of Vandalia, died at 5:33 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.

No need to hike cemetery fee

Shortly after agreeing to talk to Mother of Dolors Catholic Church about increasing the maintenance fee for the city’s Catholic Cemetery, Vandalia officials found out they didn’t need to pursue the issue.
Alderman Neil Clark, chairman of the city’s cemetery and landfill committee, reported at the June 6 city council meeting that the committee recommended talking to the church about increasing the $750 annual maintenance fee.

Dorothy M. Dolly, 84, of Vandalia, died on Friday, June 17, 2011, at Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care in Vandalia.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Hohlt and File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joe Lawson officiating. Burial was in McInturff Cemetery in Hagarstown. Visitation was held one hour before services on Monday at the funeral home. Memorials: McInturff Cemetery or Long Term Care activity fund.

Richard J. Ruble, 73, Vandalia

 

Richard J. Ruble, 73, Vandalia, died at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

No services were held.

Mr. Ruble was born on Apr. 18, 1938, in Vienna, Ill., the son of John Freeman and Mary Frances Kincade Ruble.

He is survived by sons, John  F. Ruble and Eddie R. Ruble of Mississippi; sister, Joann Mathis of California; brothers, Robert L. Ruble of Eddieville and Edward W. (Pat) Ruble of Keysport; and several nieces and nephews.

City eliminates director of economic development/tourism

As part of their effort to finalize a balanced budget, the Vandalia City Council on Monday acted on personnel matters that included the elimination of the director of economic development and tourism position.

In addition to terminating the post held by JoAnn Sasse Givens, the council also approved three layoffs -Brian Tedrick of public works department, Judy Kaiser of the city clerk's office and Linda Townsend, custodian at city hall and the public safety building.
