School district still struggling with shortfalls in state funding

Though the Vandalia Community School District was able to save $275,000 in payroll costs by not filling openings left by retiring staffers, it still may be hard pressed to keep up with plummeting state funds.
“We saved $275,000 without cutting a job,” Superintendent Rich Well told the school board Tuesday night. “We did all that through retirements. Nobody is going to the unemployment line because we cut their job.”
