Patoka High School to dedicate baseball field on Sept. 4

Patoka High School will dedicate its baseball field to a long-time program supporter next Wednesday.

Prior to the Warriors' 4:15 p.m. game against Noble/West Richland, the field will be renamed Tammy Payne Memorial Field.

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony, which will begin at about 4 p.m.

Vandalia volleyball def. St. Elmo/Brownstown, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23. The Lady Vandals JV team lost, 25-13, 23-25, 14-25, and the teams split the freshman game, 25-17, 17-25.

Vandalia soccer was defeated by Pana, 4-3.

South Central baseball defeated Windsor/Stew-Stras, 11-0.

South Central volleyball lost to St. Anthony, 18-25, 16-25.

Brownstown/St. Elmo baseball lost to North Clay, 8-0.

PHOTOS: Ramsey Tournament is in full swing

The sixth annual Ramsey Tournament kicked off the fall baseball season on Monday, with Patoka, Mulberry Grove and Ramsey representing the area in the event.

In game two, Patoka beat Mulberry Grove, 11-6, and in game one, Ramsey was defeated by Odin, 6-3.

Vandals to travel to Gillespie for opener

VANDALIA – With high temperatures projected in the 90s for Friday, the Vandals have already begun preparations for keeping themselves healthy during the season-opener.

After Tuesday morning’s practice, players were each given a bottle of water, and coach John Stout said that he and his coaching staff are watching players throughout the day at school to make sure they are staying hydrated before traveling to Gillespie.

Lady Vandals beat Shelbyville for first win of ’13

VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals picked up their first win of the fall in dominating fashion on Tuesday, taking eight of nine matches against Shelbyville.

Vandalia (1-1) outscored the Lady Rams, 99-34, over the nine matches, with Shelbyville’s lone win coming in No. 3 singles, with Kayla Lee outlasting junior Courtney Ulmer, 11-9, in a match that lasted nearly two hours.

Vandalia, SEB to meet in season-opening clash

Two teams coming off historic seasons will meet in the volleyball season-opener on Thursday, with St. Elmo/Brownstown making the in-county trip to Vandalia.

Both teams, however, have a much different look about them.

After winning the school’s first regional championship since 1985 last fall, Vandalia had to say goodbye to seven seniors and rebuild the program with a class of juniors, who have seen a tremendous amount of success, with just four losses since they were seventh-graders.

Golfers shoot career-lows in win at Pana

The Vandals golf team picked up its first event win of the season by posting its lowest score of the year on Monday to defeat Pana at Oak Terrace Golf Course.

Senior Jake Shulman, junior Jake Bowen and freshman Richie Well each tied for first by shooting 41s, and junior Zach Schaal’s 43 was the next-lowest round in the event.

They combined to give Vandalia a team score of 166, which easily beat the 197 put up by Pana.

The 41s were career-best rounds for all three Vandals, and Well had the only birdie, his third of the season.

Warriors open at 2-0 at Ramsey Tournament

RAMSEY – The Warriors have opened the season with two wins at the Ramsey Tournament, and will look to take their second straight tournament title on Friday, when they battle Odin at 5:15 p.m.

On Monday, Patoka opened the sixth annual event with an 11-6 win against Mulberry Grove, and followed that with a 5-4 win against Ramsey on Tuesday.

Against the Rams, Trey Lowery got Patoka (2-0) on the board, reaching on an error in the bottom of the third inning, and Shane Cain and Clinton Hood followed with singles to load the bases.

Rams fall in opening game of tournament

RAMSEY – A game that had the beginning of a slugfest slowed down on Monday, as Ramsey was defeated by Odin, 6-3, in the opening game of the sixth annual Ramsey Tournament.

Tylor Knisley hit the second pitch of his season for a home run in the bottom of the first inning, but that was after Odin took advantage of several errors in the top of the frame to score three runs.

“That was nice,” said coach Tony Kreke of the home run. “I’d like to see some pop from him this year, because he has the capability to do it.

Baseball insider: News and notes from the area’s smaller schools

KINMUNDY – Cutbacks approved in the spring by South Central High School’s board of education have created a new schedule for the Cougars baseball team.

Due to budget constraints because of a lack of full state funding, SCHS was forced to make cutbacks in athletics, and one of those trimmed the fall baseball schedule down to 13 dates plus the National Trail Conference Tournament.
