A fast start and a dicey ending wraps up the first Saturday night for the 2024 edition of the Greenville University football team

Greenville scored on a Eureka fumble on the second play the Red Devils ran, needed a defensive stand in the middle of the fourth quarter and a closing drive by the offense to seal a 27-7 win on Sept. 14 at FioRito Stadium at McKinzie Field in Eureka.

The win raised the GU record to 2-0 on the young season and dropped Eureka to 0-2 on the campaign. Next up for Greenville is a trip to Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday.

Greenville began the game with the ball deep in Eureka territory thanks to a short kick and a 37 yard return by Quintral Clay but last week’s explosive offense couldn’t get going and GU turned it over on downs at the Eureka 31.

But the game turned on that first play by Eureka.

After Greenville was flagged for being offsides to begin the game, Red Devil QB Kaeden Frazier scrambled to his left to throw but was dogged by GU defensive end Thomas Linnear who forced a fumble and linebacker Jaden Gibbs scooped up the loose ball and bolted 30 yards to the end zone. After the PAT was missed GU held a 6-0 advantage at the 13:05 mark of the first quarter.
