Lady Panthers soccer falls in opener

By Mark Jurgena, Advocate Sports Staff

The Greenville University women’s soccer team has experienced a difficult beginning to the 2024 season.

They have dropped both contests to begin the season.

But GU Coach Jeff Wardlaw remains steadfast in his belief in his team.

“Early season mistakes have plagued us a bit but long way to go and a very difficult schedule will continue to  challenge us,” he said. “Eliminate some of the mistakes and we are solid team.”

Kalamazoo

Their opener saw an absolute wild finish with four goals in the last five minutes.

That flurry resulted in Greenville losing a 2-1 lead and falling 4-3 to Kalamazoo at home on Sept. 2.

Dillon Baer got the Panthers off on the right foot with a goal in the eighth minute of action courtesy of an assist by Allyson Schulz.

Angie Russo broke a 1-1 tie at the half with a goal in the 56th minute. Vanessa Ramirez had the assist.

After Kalamazoo knotted the score at 2-2 with five minutes remaining, Emma Caldwell scored a goal to give Greenville the lead back.

But the Hornets scored the final two goals late to take the win.

Rhodes

Greenville got ambushed by Rhodes 4-0 on Sept. 6 in Greenville.

The Panthers were outshot 29-2 by the Lynx with 15 of those shots on goal.
