After a dozen years, the Greenville High School girl’s tennis program is under new leadership.

Longtime coach Vaughn Robart has stepped down due to work commitments and recent Greenville University graduate Emily Maltbie brings her experience after playing five seasons for the Panthers to the GHS squad.

Maltbie has 11 girls on the squad with zero seniors for this year’s team.

Despite the lack of seniors, Maltibie was pleased with the first week of practice.

“It went really well because we have a lot of returners from previous years,” she said. “We also had new people show up in the summer. That is always good when some of them have a good foundation in tennis. So we just started right up and jumped right into things playing both singles and doubles and doing work drills to start out.”

The Lady Comets will open their season Saturday morning at the Andy Simpson Doubles Invite in Alton. Matches will be held at both Lewis & Clark Community College and Alton High School.

“I’m really looking forward to the fact that it’s just doubles,” Maltbie began. “In most matches, we play singles and doubles but this one since it’s just doubles we can really focus on just doubles for these next couple of weeks and really focus on where the girls are at in doubles. Then we can focus on singles the next week.”
