Greenville University turf field rolling out a new era

By Mark Jurgena, Advocate Sports Staff

If you’ve driven near the Greenville University athletic fields recently you’ve seen the massive construction project occurring on the Robert “Ish” Smith baseball field.
The Panthers had a significant donation from 1991 baseball alumnus Ritchie Ware to cover the cost of a brand-new turf field for both the infield and outfield portions of the facility.
Additionally, new fencing has been put in around the complex.
“Of course, I feel good, we’re getting a brand new turf field, we’re really excited,” said longtime Greenville University baseball coach Lynn Carlson. “They are on target. The target was the end of August. They are on pace to do that but it’s probably a little tighter window than I thought.”
The oldest turf company, AstroTurf out of Dalton, Ga. manufactured the field for the Panthers. They are the same company that created the turf field at Greenville High School at Don Stout Field.
Mid-America Sports Construction out of Lee’s Summit, Mo. did the installation of the field for AstroTurf and began work on May 20. With all the rain in the past two to three weeks, the project is a little behind but according to Carlson his discussions with the project manager indicate they will be done by the end of August.
