Comet football squad wraps up summer workouts

By Mark Jurgena, Advocate Sports Staff

The Greenville High School football team wrapped up their summer on-the-field prep for the upcoming fall season in late July with a three-day camp here in Greenville.

GHS opens practice this Monday, has their fall public scrimmage on Aug. 23, and hosts Staunton on Aug. 30 in their season opener.

Longtime Comet coach Todd Hutchinson was pleased with the five practices and team bonding that took place during the camp.

“It’s always important to get the team together on consecutive days to really improve their skills and to develop into a unit that sacrifices and wants to play the game for each other; for the team,” said Hutchinson. “We had great effort and honestly some great commitment to the team camp and all summer really. Our guys gave great effort regardless of whether it was a morning or evening workout or in the weight room.

“We’ve had great commitment to the weight room on a consistent basis throughout the summer and actually since the end of last season.”

GHS had on-field workouts all three evenings with morning workouts Tuesday and Wednesday. The squad had a late workout Tuesday night starting at 9 p.m. then spent the night in the Parker Auxillary Gym before getting up for breakfast, a morning workout, and weight room time on Wednesday.
