Hammann reflects on his time at GHS

By Mark Jurgena, Advocate Sports Staff

NOTE: This interview took place earlier in the spring however I thought it better to hold the story until after the summer girl’s basketball season had completed. My apologies if it was a shortsighted idea.

Ultimately the head coach makes all of the decisions.

But for former GHS girls basketball coach Quin Hammann, the biggest thing he learned in coaching was something quite the opposite.

“The number one thing is to rely on people around you,” he said in May.  “You come in as a young coach and you think you know it all and you don’t know anything really. Becoming Kolin’s (Dothager’s) assistant, then learning from him and coach (Terry) Swalley coming in, and coach (Josh) Cox. Coach (Toldd) Cantrill on the boys side, the amount of stuff I Iearned from him throughout the years just watching his practices.”

That humble approach to the job helped return the Lady Comets basketball program to a regular contender for South Central Conference crowns along with winning records in every season but one during his tenure both as the head coach and assistant for GHS.

He was the head coach for the Lady Comets for two years after serving as an assistant to Kolin Dothager for seven.

In nine years, the Lady Comets experienced only one losing season, while winning five SCC championships and a regional crown in one of the toughest areas for girls basketball in the state.
