The Vandalia Old Capitals continued its vintage baseball success Saturday, picking up a trio of wins at the St. Louis Cup in Forest Park.
The 14-team tournament consisted of teams from Southern Illinois all the way to Pennsylvania and Tennessee.
In their first match, the Capitals picked up a dominant 8-1 win over the Indiana Hoosiers. Kyle Hawkins went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI’s, while Codey Norris went 3-for-4 as well. TK Kinkead and Tim DeSherlia each added a double to round out the offensive output.
The Capitals' offensive success carried over into the second game of the day, as they defeated the St. Louis Unions, 11-1, with Kinkead and DeSherlia going 3-for-3. Steve Hawkins, Terry Sutherland and Norris each went 2-for-3.
In its final match Vandalia rounded out the 3-0 showing with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over the Hog and Hominy Picked Nine from Tennessee. Cody Hawkins secured the game-winning double in the seventh inning, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Capitals, now 14-1 on the season, will continue vintage baseball action Aug. 27, when they travel to Breese to take on the Breese Shoal Farmers and St. Louis Brown Stockings.
