Patoka man to be inducted at SIU

A former Patoka athlete will be inducted to the Southern Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.
John Garrett is among the six inductees in the 2012 class.

Garrett, who was a 5-foot-10, point guard nicknamed "Mouse," scored 995 points over 72 games (13.8 points per game) during his three-year career at SIU. When he played, from 1969-72, freshmen were not eligible.

Garrett was especially dangerous at the free-throw line, where he made 130-of-146 shots his senior season and 85 percent of shots for his career, which is fifth all-time at SIU.

He earned all-conference honors in 1972, and along with fellow Hall of Fame inductee Nate Hawthorne, helped the Salukis win the Midwestern Conference championship his junior season.

Patoka takes second at CORL Tourney

The Patoka High School boys basketball team placed second at the Christ Our Rock Lutheran Tournament on Saturday, falling to the hosts, 49-46.

Patoka held a lead after three quarters, but a late rally by the Silver Stallions powered them to victory.
All-tournament selection Johnnie Clift, a sophomore, led the Warriors, with a season-high 24 points.

Senior Brandon Budds was also an all-tournament selection, as was Mulberry Grove sophomore Devonta Williamson.

St. Elmo takes fourth at NTC Tourney

St. Elmo placed fourth at the National Trail Conference Tournament after a late rally came up short during a 49-47 loss to St. Anthony.

For the Eagles, the loss was the second narrow loss to the Bulldogs this season.

Following the tournament on Tuesday, the Eagles lost to Teutopolis for the second game time in three games, falling, 58-41.

Against St. Anthony, the Eagles led by one at halftime before allowing the Bulldogs a 16-9 run over the third period.

St. Elmo outscored St. Anthony, 13-9, in the fourth quarter, but that left the Eagles just short.
