James D. Altom, 69, of Vandalia, died on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at his home.
Per Mr. Altom’s wishes, his remains were cremated. Family services will be held at a later date. Day Funeral Homes in Patoka was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.dayfuneralhomes.com.
Mr. Altom was born on April 6, 1941, in Brownwood, Mo., the son of William E. and Ella Zohner Altom.

Vandalia hires city administrator
A Northern Illinois man with more than 20 years of experience in government administration is Vandalia’s new city administrator.
After meeting in closed session for about 30 minutes on Monday evening to discuss personnel matters, and several other issues, the Vandalia City Council unanimously approved the hiring of John A. McIntyre.
McIntyre, who now lives in Orland Hills, fills the post that has been vacant since Jimmy Morani left in April to become the village administrator in New Baden.
LuLu’s Stuff n Such Ribbon-Cutting
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held last week at LuLu's Stuff n Such, a store selling used furniture and home decor at 414 W. Gallatin St. in Vandalia. Owned by Danny and Linda Kirkland, and Alvin and Laurie Helton, the store is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Sundays and Mondays. The telephone number is 283-9009. "We're here to provide good-quality used furniture at a reasonable price, so everyone can have nice things," said Linda Kirkland.

Legislators, IDOT reps hear opposition to Route 51 bypass plan
About 125 people crowded into Vandalia City Hall last Wednesday to let their political representatives know that they are not happy with the path of the U.S. Route 51 bypass proposed by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Though only one of the four invited state and federal politicians made the 90-minute meeting, each had representatives there. And they left the meeting with no doubt that the current bypass route – which goes through or near several north end neighborhoods – is not favored by local residents.
