Salvation Army raises $15,200 in county
The Salvation Army bell ringers in Fayette County raised a record-breaking $15,200 from their efforts during the Christmas holiday season. Last year, $15,022 was raised.
The volunteers rang the bells for more than 210 hours at locations across Fayette County. Donations were collected from shoppers, who put money in the Salvation Army kettles.
The interdenominational ministry will help more than 450 individuals or families from Fayette County who face a financial crisis due to fires, unemployment, medical emergencies and other events.
Salvation Army volunteers work closely with Caring & Sharing, the CEFS food bank and other relief agencies.
Families facing a financial crisis may seek help from the Salvation Army on Wednesday mornings at First United Methodist Church, located at 127 N. Fourth St. in Vandalia.

'Not A Fan' series starts at Liberty
Liberty Christian Church in rural Brownstown has begun a new six-week sermon series titled "Not A Fan."
The series will explore Jesus's invitation to follow him – not to just be a "fan," but to be a completely committed follower.
The series will include small-group Bible studies.

Holy Cross to study 'Batman' movie
Holy Cross Lutheran Church is offering a new Bible study on the movie, "Batman – The Dark Knight," on Wednesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. at the church.
The study will explore the issues raised by the movie, and will determine what the Bible has to say about those issues. Children under age 13 must be accompanied by a parent.

Wild Game Supper, movie is Sunday
Brownstown First Christian Church will be hosting its annual Wild Game Supper this Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
The public is invited to attend, and to bring a wild game dish and the trimmings to share with others.
Following the meal, the movie "Courageous" will be shown at 6 p.m. The movie follows the lives of four law enforcement officers who find the challenges of their job easy compared to the demands of fatherhood.
"Protecting the streets is second nature," the promotional material said, "but raising their own children in a God-honoring way – that takes courage."

Vigil for life is Monday at Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham will host a vigil for life next Monday.
The service includes a 6 p.m. prayer service and a 6:30 p.m. Mass.
A business meeting will be conducted in the parish center near the church. At that meeting, a video will be shown and current pro-family legislation at both the state and national level will be discussed. Information on upcoming pro-life events will be shared at the meeting.
