“It was that day, that in Phoenix that I know it was above 110 F,” said Ashley Holden of ABC 15 Arizona and former Greenville resident, as she remembered the story that got her and her team nominated for an Emmy that they ultimately won. “It was such a team effort to get the coverage on the air,” Holden continued.
The story they were covering was about a propane fire that was by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. A propane company that was located near the airport, and also near a park-n-ride lot. A spark from the propane company spread to all of the parked cars in the lot next door. There were cars on fire, and propane tanks sending shrapnel into the air.
“It’s a day I think a lot of us won’t forget, we were in wall to wall coverage,” Holden stated. Wall to wall coverage is when the coverage of a news event is non-stop and usually live.
While working on a separate story, Holden found out that two of her four entries were nominated for the award in the category of Breaking News/Continuous Coverage. They ended up winning for station excellence.
The second story that Holden was nominated for focused on teen violence in Arizona in the East part of The Valley.
“They do an Emmy awards show,” Holden stated. This show took place in Phoenix, which Holden attended with her team. “We’re all journalists, and this job is a passion for us, so to watch people and colleges of yours be celebrated, is really cool, and I think so important.”
