Blue Jay 5K Enters 14th Year

By Rebecca Sponsler, Advocate Editor

The Greenville Junior High Cheerleaders are gearing up for the 14th annual Blue Jay 5k, set to take place this Saturday, the 14th, at 8:30 a.m. If you have not registered yet, don’t worry there is still time. Participants can register the day of the race up until race time.

There are six age groups ranging from 10 and under to 50 and older. According to GJHS Cheer Coach Galya Brauns there are around 50 participants signed up, and there is room for more!

Last year’s overall winner was former Blue Jay Cheerleader Mattie Carter with a time of 19 minutes and 17 seconds.

“The cheerleaders have been working hard to prepare for the race this year, it is their first time performing a cheer in front of a crowd, and it is also their favorite event to cheer at,” Brauns stated. “The girls love cheering on the runners and walkers on race day and showing off some of their tumbling and stunting skills,” she continued.

This event will help the cheerleaders pay for competition fees, music and other equipment.
