Vandalia man dies in Sunday afternoon crash

A Vandalia man was killed in a one-car accident just outside Vandalia on Sunday afternoon.
The Illinois State Police said that a preliminary investigation showed that Burl Prater, 75, was driving a 2000 Ford Contour on West Main Street, about one-quarter of a mile west of County Road 600 East shortly after 1 p.m. when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the road to the right, overturned and came to rest in a creek bed.
Fayette County Coroner David Harris pronounced Prater dead at the scene.
A passenger in the vehicle, 52-year-old Patricia Bales of Vandalia, was transported to Fayette County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Also responding to the scene were the Vandalia Police Department and Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department.
The state police also handled a motorcycle accident on Interstate 70 last Friday night.
According to state police, Thomas Gordon, 34, of Iuka, was driving a 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle west on I-70 near milepost 61 when a deer ran onto the roadway and he was unable to avoid hitting it.
The collision with the deer caused the motorcycle to lay down and eject both Gordon and a passenger, Athena Gordon, 45, of Iuka.
Thomas Gordon was transported to SBL Fayette County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later flown to a regional hospital for further treatment.

The accident caused the closure of the roadway for about one hour during the crash investigation, with the Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department assisting with traffic control.
On Monday, Aug. 3, at 2:23 p.m., the state police handled an accident on I-70 eastbound at milepost 78.5.
According to the state police, Melanie D. Brandenburg, 56, of Casey, was driving eastbound in a 2012 Chrysler 2012 during a heavy rain storm.
The ISP said that Brandenburg lost control of her vehicle, sliding into the center median.

One eastbound lane of I-70 was closed during the crash investigation and scene cleanup.

The state police last Wednesday released a enforcement activity report for July.
During July, state police issued 285 citations and 294 written warnings, including 162 speeding citations, five DUI’s, one seat belt citation, one child restraint citation, 13 distracted driving citations, 103 written warnings for speeding and 15 criminal arrests.
Troopers also assisted 280 motorists, conducted 54 motor carrier inspections and investigated 78 traffic crashes.
