County-wide meeting on marijuana sales planned

Representatives of governmental entities met last week to discuss the possible sale of marijuana in the county.
Now, they plan to hear from residents of the county.
Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman announced at Monday’s city council meeting that he met with mayors in other communities in the county and representatives of the county board to discuss the sale of cannabis.
“They knew I was going to do a task force and they recommended a county-wide meeting,” Gottman said.
That meeting, with a town hall format, has been tentatively set for Oct. 10 and will be held in Vandalia.
A new law allowing the use of recreational marijuana on a limited basis goes into effect on Jan. 1.
Illinois is the 11th state to legalize cannabis and the first to allow commercial sales.
Under the law, the state will award licenses for commercial sales.
Communities may apply for such a license, but are not guaranteed receiving one.
Thus far, the state has awarded licenses, all to Green Thumb establishments currently providing medical marijuana in Naperville, Joliet, Canton, Mundelein and Effingham.
