Woman killed in Tuesday accident on U.S. Route 40
A Vandalia woman was killed in a two-car accident on U.S. Route 40 east of Vandalia on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Illinois State Police, a preliminary investigation determined that Jessica Lynn Wagner, 40, of Vandalia, was westbound on U.S. Route 40, about 1½ miles east of Vandalia when her 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt traveled into the eastbound lane and collided head-on with a 2014 Chevrolet Captiva driven by Penny L. Wilson, 59, of Vandalia.
The state police said that Wagner sustained fatal injuries in the accident, and that Wilson was airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield with serious injuries.
Wagner was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner David Harris.
Due to the accident, Route 40 between Vandalia and Bluff City was closed to traffic for about five hours.
