Lady Cougars win regional title
Zoe Johnston homered and Sydnee Garrett hurled a five-hitter as South Central won the school’s second regional and its first since 1994.
South Central scored all of its runs in the sixth inning in the 5-1 win over Woodlawn on Saturday at Webster Field in Kinmundy.
Down 1-0 going into the sixth inning, South Central took advantage of two Woodlawn errors and used a base hit by Lexie Reid, an RBI by Katie Shumate, a fielder’s choice and Johnston’s two-run homer.
Down 5-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Woodlawn was retired on a line drive out to Johnston at first base, a strikeout and a pop up.
“Sydnee pitched a great game, having control of her pitches all day, and our defense played great, also,” Lady Cougars coach Gary Kapper said.
“This was a total team effort from everyone who played, as well as the girls in the dugout,” Kapper said.
Garrett gave up five singles and struck out 10 without giving up any walks.
South Central advances to the Marissa Sectional at 4:30 p.m., facing the winner of the New Athens/Valmeyer in the Okawville Regional championship.
South Central – Reid single, run; Garrett single, run; Shumate RBI; Rivera run; Johnston home run, run, 2 RBI; Swift single; and Geiler run.
