Vandals win in 5 over Carlinville, Pana

Matthew Wells tossed a four-hitter as Vandalia topped Carlinville, 10-0, in a five-inning contest at Vandalia Mutual Field on Tuesday.

Freshman Markus Isaiah was 3-for-3 with two doubles and Nathan Casey was 2-for-2 with 4 RBI’s as the Vandals staked Wells to a 7-0 lead after three innings and finished them off with Blake Morrison’s drive to the left field wall in the fifth.
Thomas Ritchey and Casey walked in the first, with Ritchey scoring on the second of five Carlinville errors and Casey coming home on a ground out by Morrison.
Two more Cavalier errors in the second inning aided the Vandals four-run second inning as the Vandals had just two hits, singles by Morrison and Isaiah.
In the third, Isaiah led off with a double and scored on a single by Casey.
Isaiah led of the fifth with his second double, and he scored on a double by Casey, who advanced to third on a ground out by Garett McNary and scored on Morrison’s fly ball over the left fielder to end the game.
Wells struck out five and walked one, with 44 of his 67 pitches in the strike zone.

Garett McNary went 4-for-4 with a home run while also scattering eight hits on the mound in the Vandals’ 12-2 five-inning win.
Pana was up 2-0 after one inning, but those were the only runs that McNary would give up in a six-strikeout performance. Of his 73 pitches, 49 were strikes, and he walked just one batter.
Vandalia narrowed the lead with McNary’s home run in the second, then broke out for nine runs in the fourth inning with only five hits, including a double by Nathan Casey.
The Vandals took advantage of two Pana errors, a hit batsman and a passed ball.
Marcus Zimmerman, reaching when hit by a pitch, and Caleb Slater, who walked, scored the Vandals’ final two runs in the fifth inning.

The Vandals dropped a twinbill to Harrisburg on Saturday, falling 10-0 and 3-1 in a road contest.
In the first game, Vandalia was to just two hits, singles by Cameron Gelsinger and Caleb Slater, and committed five errors.
Blake Morrison took the loss, giving up eight runs, five of them earned, and four walks. Kyle Guffey gave up two runs, one earned, while recording one strikeout and one walk.

In the nitecap, Vandalia’s comeback effort fell short after Harrisburg built a 3-0 lead after five innings.
The Vandals’ lone run came in the sixth when Matthew Wells walked, moved to second on a walk to Marcus Zimmeran and scored on a single by Nathan Casey.
Casey led Vandalia offensively, going 2-for-3 with the lone RBI.
Caleb Slater took the loss, giving up two runs, both earned in relief of Garrett Austin, who gave up one run. Autson struck out one and walked two, and Slater had two strikeouts.

After Litchfield tied the score in the top of the seventh on Friday, Vandalia won in the bottom of the seventh on a passed ball.
Marcus Zimmerman and Thomas Ritchey singled to lead off the seventh inning, and Zimmerman was on third, with Garett McNary squaring to bunt when the passed ball allowed Zimmerman to score.
Zimmerman doubled and scored in the first inning and Nathan Casey singled and scored after Litchfield scored three runs in the top of the inning.
Litchfield scored three more times in the second inning, and Vandalia responded with two more in the bottom of the inning with Zimmerman and Matthew Wells scoring after a double and walk, respectively.
Mitchell Casey singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Markus Isaiah in the third, then the Vandalia took an 8-7 lead with three runs in the fourth.
In that fourth inning, McNary reached when hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Mitchell Casey, Morrison walked and scored on a single by Caleb Slater, and Casey scored on a sacrifice fly by Wells.
Zimmerman was 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI, and Nathan Casey was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in.
Garett Austin got the win in relief, giving up one run and one hit in the seventh. Cameron Gelsinger went six innings, allowing seven runs, six earned; he struck out one an walked two.

The Vandals pounded out eight hits, but lost to Father McGivney, 4-3, in a road contest last Thursday.
Father McGivney led 2-1 after the first inning and added two runs in the third while holding Vandalia to single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Marcus Zimmerman was 3-for-4 and Caleb Slater was 2-for-3 for Vandalia.
Blake Morrison took the loss, giving up four runs, but all four runs were unearned. Morrison had three strikeouts and one walk.
