Aces survive late SEB run
Mulberry Grove used five three-pointers to build a 10-point lead after one quarter on Friday, then held off a last-minute push to edge St. Elmo/Brownstown, 65-60.
The visiting Aces had three treys from Alex Franklin and two from Courtlyn Latham to lead 22-12 after one quarter, and after Lewis Brown got the Eagles within seven, Latham hit another three-pointer to put the lead back at 10.
From that point, the Eagles outscored the Aces 12-6 to cut the lead to five at halftime.
Franklin and Joey Linnabary connected from three-point range at the start of the third period to put the Aces up by 11, and after Brown scored to make it 37-28, Franklin scored twice and Ross Tompkins once to give the Aces a 44-28 lead.
The Aces were on top 53-37 at the end of the third quarter, but St. Elmo/Brownstown’s Andy Goldsborough scored at the buzzer to cut the lead to 14.
A bucket by Brown made it 55-47, then a basket and free by Goldsborough and a basket by Philpot reduced the Aces’ lead to five, 57-52.
Another Goldsborough basket made it 61-55, then Isaac Maxey made it 61-57 with two free throws.
After Franklin scored to put the lead back at five, Brown hit a three-pointer to make it 62-60 with 57 seconds left.
Franklin then made one of two free throws, giving St. Elmo/Brownstown 23.5 seconds to tie the score. But a traveling call with 11.4 seconds left gave the ball back to the Aces, who single free throws by Kade Swain with 10.4 and 5.6 left.
Mulberry Grove made 10 of 20 shots from three-point range, while St. Elmo made six of 19 for 31 percent.
Conversely, the Eagles held an edge at the free throw line, 10 of 14 for 71 percent to 9 of 19 for 47 percent for Mulberry Grove.
Each team had 13 turnovers in the contest, and the Eagles had a 38-33 edge in rebounds.
Brown led all scorers with 29 points, four of them on three-pointers, and Franklin led the Aces with five three-pointers and 25 points.

St. Elmo/Brownstown led Patoka by 10 points at halftime and 13 after three quarters, but were forced to hold a fourth-quarter run by the Warriors.
Patoka scored 22 points to the Eagles’ 10 points, coming three points short of completing the comeback.
In the comeback effort, Patoka started fouling SEB players, forcing them to connect from the free-throw line. It almost worked, as the Eagles made only 10 of 25 charity shots.
Brown led St. Elmo/Brownstown with 23 points, and Isaac Maxey added 17.
Ethan Finckbone led the Warriors with 18 points, and Tyler Alexander was also in double figures with 15, on five three-pointers.
