St. Anthony repeats as FNB Vandalia Holiday Tourney champs

On its way to defending its state title, Effingham St. Anthony successfully defended its title at the First National Bank Vandalia Holiday Tournament.

St. Anthony won the 46th annual tournament by going undefeated in five contests and defeating Flora in the championship game, 49-38.
Shelbyville, finishing 4-1, took third place, edging the host team, 60-57, leaving the Vandals at 3-2 for the tournament.
Pana (3-2) held off comeback efforts by South Central to win the fifth-place game, 65-56, and Father McGivney (2-3) defeated Patoka (1-4) in the seventh-place game.
In the ninth-place game, Vandalia 2 (Vandalia’s JV squad) picked up its lone win, defeating Ramsey (0-5).
Adam Levitt of St. Anthony was the tournament MVP, and he was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Cade Walsh and Alex Deters. Other all-tourney selections were Nathan Casey and Blake Morrison of Vandalia, Trent Geiler of South Central, Drew Woodrow and Trenton Brown of Flora, and Malcolm Miller and Turner Pullen of Shelbyville.
In the title game, St. Anthony led 12-8 after the first quarter, but Flora held a 26-21 lead at the halftime break. St. Anthony took control of the game in the third quarter, scoring 10 while holding Flora to just one two-pointer, then held a 18-10 edge in the fourth quarter to repeat as champions.
In the third-place game, Vandalia led after the first three quarters, but Malcom Miller scored 11 of Shelbyville’s 18 points in the final quarter to lead the Rams to the win.
Miller’s 30-point performance offset Nathan Casey’s 19 and Blake Morrison’s 18 for the Vandals.
Vandals coach Brian Buscher hopes that that game helps his team later in the season.
“You’re going to face some adversity at times and you have to learn from it and play through it,” Buscher said.
“As I always tell them, we want to be playing our best basketball at the end of the season.
“I think we played well in some of the games (of the VHT) and I think we played well in the first half of this (Shelbyville) game,” he said.
Vandals advanced to the third-place game by defeating Pana, 68-48, with Garett McNary scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half to help Vandalia pull away from the Panthers. Casey led the Vandals with 20 points, Devon Little had 14 points and Markus Isaiah was also in double figures with 12 points.
On Thursday afternoon, the Vandals held a slim, four-point lead over Ramsey at halftime, but exploded in the second half to record an 85-56 win. In that game, Blake Morrison hit on eight of 12 attempts from three-point range and led all scorers with 30 points.
The Vandals other loss in the tournament was to the tournament champs, 51-32. Morrison, with 10 points, was the only Vandal in double figures for that game.
South Central closed out the tournament with a 65-56 loss to Pana. The Cougars outscored the Panthers by two points in the second and fourth quarters, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 19-10 deficit in the first quarter.
Logan Lotz scored 16 to lead the Cougars and Trent Geiler and Hunter Brandt were also in double figures with 12 and 13, respectively.
Despite the loss, South Central coach James VanScyoc saw some good.
“I like the fact that we never gave up,” VanScyoc said. “We got down 12 and 15 at one point, then got it back to within seven at halftime.
“We had a chance to get it within five, but we missed a layup. Then, we got down at the start of the third quarter and played our way back to a single-digit deficit.
“It seemed like every time we had a chance to get back in it, we turned the ball over on one or two trips and they got baskets off of that,” he said. “But our guys never gave up.
“I’m glad we’re back over here. It’s a good tournament to play in; I played in it years ago,” VanScyoc said. “I like the number of games we get to play, and we get to see some competition that we don’t normally get to play, somebody like Shelbyville and Pana.
“All this does is help us toward the postseason,” he said.
