Longhorn Cowgirls Enjoying Cooler Weather
Longhorn cows are survivors. We have read that they can survive on the barest of necessities, such as poor food supply and eating briers and weeds, and have thrived on such poor nutrition.
Our cowgirls’ survival skills have never been put to the test. Here on the Homestead, they have always had hay and grain supplied to supplement the pasture when the grass is brown and dry from lack of rain … and I have never seen them yet munching on weeds.
Today (Tuesday) it is windy and cool in the early morning, just after a good rain, which was badly needed, and the cows are grazing on some new, fresh, grass, and although it isn’t very high, they are seem to be enjoying it, as they are letting their good hay stay in the hay ring.
The water tank is always available for them, as is a salt block, so they might not fare too well now if they had to live in the wild on their own.
We think they would miss us humans, too, as they are always curious about what we are doing outside and come to the fence to watch us.

Thursday is our hobo stew meeting, and we will meet at the Emanuel Methodist Church, north of Brownstown, at 11 a.m. and eat at noon. Take two cans of veggies for the stew pot (which will already have an already-cooked roast beef, by the head hobo, Flo Allen).

Janet Elam writes, the FCCF public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. this Thursday at the Fayette County Hospital conference room
If you haven’t heard, the FCCF Carnival in the Park was a success.
They were very pleased with the number of people who attended, nearly 500, and there were there playing games. This was what they were trying to accomplish.
The Volley for the Cure was a huge success, raising $4,810 for the Volley for the Cure.
They are in the early stages of getting a website for FCCF and will be discussing what they want on the site.
The public is invited to the Thursday meeting.
Coming  & Going
An  Inspirational & Fulfilling Weekend…
… for the old Homesteaders, namely, Bill & Panzi. On Saturday, we got caught up on several chores around home, and on Sunday morning, we accepted the Rev. Bob Carter’s invitation to “be his friends” (which we have been for many, many, years, when we went on a missionary trip with them).
He asked us to attend his church, First Baptist Church of Brownstown, for “Friend Day.”
We enjoyed seeing several old (and young) friends there, and sitting with Bob and his lovely wife, Jaunita, and their little granddaughter, for the service.  We enjoyed the beautiful joyful, music, played by the young people and the song sung by the little children, which is always special.
After church, we gathered in the fellowship room for a potluck meal which was bountiful and included fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans (all among my  favorites) and deserts of all kinds. I chose Vernus Lytle’s chocolate pie. (I have sampled her chocolate pie before and they are heaven-sent.)
And on to Hillsboro …
… that evening to the Free Methodist Church, where we heard the Southern IlIllinois Homecoming Gospel Choir, which included Steve Ladd, our own Tammy Carson and  Dewayne Brown (of the popular “ FourGiven” quartet), and all three sang solos and duets with others.
We saw several people there from Brownstown and Vandalia.
Golden Years Building Report
“Let there be light” – There is now glorious illumination with a flick of a switch in the new building, as well as plenty of outlets, thanks to the input of the ladies and the thoughtfulness of the gentlemen.
“Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink” – Not so in the New Golden Years building, because friend Kenny Montgomery is bringing in the water to “fill our cups ‘till they runneth over.”
Perfect environmental conditions (cozy warmth or refreshing cool) -Just dial the temperature wanted as soon as the cement pads for the units are in place for our heating and cooling man, Todd, to finish up.
Thanksgiving Day dinner in the new building is our goal and it is drawing near. And if we don’t have the floor covering down yet, well, the first pilgrims and Indian friends gave thanks standing and/or kneeling on the earth – think about it.
(But I am thankful we have electric or gas ovens, turkeys already dressed and emptied out, aluminum foil, canned pumpkin, gentle dish soap, grocery stores and all of God’s blessings He is bestowing upon the Golden Years Club members and friends.
