Vandals top Greenville in SCC game on Tuesday
Vandalia avenged a one-run loss earlier in the season with a 3-1 win over the Comets in Greenville on Tuesday.
Both pitchers hurled complete games, and while Greenville’s Lucas Carlson allowed fewer hits than the Vandals Richie Well, Well got the win.
Well, now 3-0, struck out five and gave up seven hits and four walks, throwing 90 pitches in the complete-game win.
Carlson allowed five hits and struck out nine while allowing two walks, throwing 100 pitches.
Vandalia scored its first run quickly, with leadoff batter Marcus Zimmerman reaching on a single and advancing to second on a stolen base and to third on a outfield fly by Well, then scoring on a double by Nathan Casey.
Casey reached third on a passed ball and scored on a ground ou by Alec Schroeder.
The Vandals' other run came in the third, with Kelly Jones reaching on a walk, stealing second, moving to third on Schroeder’s ground out and scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Blake Morrison.
Vandalia improved to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The Vandals scored three times in the final frame to edge South Central, 4-3, in a Monday contest at Lions Field in Kinmundy.
Marcus Zimmerman started off the rally with a single and moved around to score on singles by Richie Well, Nathan Casey and Kelly Jones.
Well also scored on Casey’s single and Casey scored on the base knock by Jones.
South Central scored three times in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead, with Brandt and Davis reaching on errors and Matheny reaching on a walk before scoring, Matheny on an error and Brandt and Davis on singles Blomberg and Markley.
Matthew Wells got the win for Vandalia, allowing four hits while striking out one and walking two in 3 2/3 innings. He followed Alec Schroeder, who struck out four, walked three and gave up three runs.
Hunter Brandt took the loss for the Cougars, striking out one and walking one. Ryan Matheny pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh inning.
A three-run fifth inning lifted Staunton over the Vandals, 8-6, at Vandalia Mutual Field last Friday.
After each team scored three times in the opening frame, Staunton scored twice in the third inning and the Vandals tied it up with two in the bottom of the fourth. Vandalia scored its final run in the sixth when Marcus Zimmerman crossed the plate for the second time in the game.
Kelly Jones took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one. Richie Well started for the Vandals, allowing five runs on seven hits and striking out four, and Alec Schroeder pitched the final inning, striking out two.

Matthew Wells tossed a two-hitter as the Vandals blanked Shelbyville, 10-0, in a five-inning contest last Thursday.
Wells struck out three in three innings of work to improve to 2-1 on the season, and Alec Schroeder gave up one hit and struck out two in the final two innings.
