Statehouse events this weekend

This state’s oldest existing capitol will host two holiday events this weekend, including one that includes a popular give-away.

The Vandalia Statehouse is the location for the Christmas Gala on Friday evening and then the annual Christmas Open House on Saturday night.
The Christmas Gala, a cocktail affair held by the Vandalia Historical Society, is from 6-8 p.m. on Friday.
Tickets are $50 each, and they include hors d’oeurves, beverages, live music and one of this year’s Statehouse Christmas ornaments. That ticket also includes a one-year membership in the Vandalia Historical Society.
The deadline for buying tickets was last week, but may still be available by calling 322-4411 or emailing to hall4800@yahoo.com.
On Saturday, the two-hour Christmas Open House begins at 6 p.m., with a long line of people waiting to receive one of this year’s Christmas ornaments (pictured here).
The event includes tours of the Statehouse and refreshments of cookies and cider, and while there is no admission fee, those attending are asked to take a canned good or non-perishable food for the local food pantry.
The first 100 families signing the Statehouse register at the Christmas Open House on Saturday will receive one of this year’s Christmas ornaments.
As always, the Statehouse will be trimmed for the holiday season with decorations like those used when the building served as the state capitol (1836-39), fresh greenery and fruits, and will be illuminated with more than 250 candles.
The event is sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which operates the historic site, and the Vandalia Historical Society.
