School registrations start this Thursday

The start of another school year is just around the corner, with area school district registering students within the next week.
The first district to register students is South Central, on Thursday of this week, and the Vandalia district is allowing parents to pre-register their students online.
The registration dates for area schools follow:
• South Central – Thursday, from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., at South Central Middle School, 503 S. Madison St., Kinmundy. This is for student and athletic registration.
• Patoka – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
• Brownstown – Thursday, Aug. 6, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., Brownstown Elementary School cafeteria.
• St. Elmo – Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
• Ramsey – Thursday, Aug. 6, 2-6 p.m.; and Friday, Aug. 7, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
• Vandalia – Tuesday, Aug. 4, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Wednesday, Aug. 5, 8 a.m.-3 p.m., in Vandalia Junior High School cafeteria.
Families may begin registering their children online this week, by using their children’s ID and password to access their children’s accounts at Those needing assistance with this process may contact the district office, 283-4525.
A mandatory freshman/sophomore orientation will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, in the VCHS gym.
An orientation session for pre-K through eighth grade will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13, in the VJHS gym. Discussion will include the traffic flow pattern for the coming school year.
Back(Packs) 2 School
First United Methodist Church, located at 127 N. Fourth St. in Vandalia, is providing school backpacks to children in need in grades K-12 at Back(Packs) 2 School Night on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 4-8 p.m.
The event will include a petting zoo, snacks and chances to win a new bike, camp scholarship or gift certificates to local restaurants. The prize drawing will be at 8 p.m. Local beauticians will be providing free haircuts that evening.
Children must accompany a parent or other adult to receive a backpack. They are to enter through the back door of the church.
First Methodist Church is joining with First Presbyterian and local businesses and individuals to provide school supplies, through Back(Packs) 2 School and Tools for School
Tools for School
First Presbyterian Church, located at 1221 W. Fillmore St., in Vandalia, is again hosting Tools for School, serving in need students in Fayette County.
The program is open to students in pre-kindergarten through college in Brownstown, Farina, Ramsey, St. Elmo, St. Peter and Vandalia.
The hours of operation for Tools for School are:
• Wednesday, Aug. 12 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
• Thursday, Aug. 13 – 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
• Friday, Aug. 14 – 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
• Saturday, Aug. 15 – 9 a.m.-noon.
Those picking up school supplies are to use the north door of the church, and students must accompany adults in order to receive supplies.
